Program Cost and Payment Information

Participants in Habitat’s volunteer program become active partners with people of another culture, working side-by-side to build decent, affordable housing.

Tax Deductions
Funding raised toward the cost of a Global Village trip also includes the cost of food, lodging and transportation during the trip. Only a portion of the required trip payment supports the charitable purpose of the hosting Habitat program. Depending on the participant's country of origin, this trip's cost may or may not be tax-deductible. Please consult a tax adviser concerning your specific situation.

Funding your trip
If you are interested in fundraising to help pay for your trip costs, you can attend the free fundraising webinars every first Tuesday of the month. For more information, email at tammie.cooper@thrivent.com.

Program cost

The ultimate purpose of Habitat Global Village trips is to improve the housing conditions of families around the world and provide volunteers with rewarding experiences and cultural exchange opportunities.

Each Habitat volunteer pays a program cost that is used in the following ways:
  • Building program - A portion of the program cost helps to further Habitat’s home building work by supporting program coordination and local construction.
  • Volunteer logistics - A portion of the program cost covers logistics, including accommodations, meals, local transportation and some local cultural activities.
  • Volunteer team coordination - A portion of the program cost covers on-the-ground trip coordination by a trip leader and the Habitat host program. Expenses may include on-the-ground staff costs, translators, orientation materials, first aid supplies and a team leader’s expenses.
  • Health and safety - A portion of the cost covers a Travel medical insurance policy and MEDEX Secure assistance in case of crisis for trips outside the United States. All program costs include a minimal contingency fee for emergencies. See the Global Village website for details.
  • FrontierMEDEX policy - Participants traveling outside the United States are covered by the FrontierMEDEX policy providing emergency evacuation insurance in the case of natural disaster or serious political unrest.

Trip cancellation or interruption insurance
Habitat for Humanity strongly encourages all participants to evaluate their needs and purchase trip cancellation insurance commensurate with those needs.

The program cost does not include:
  • Participant airfare.
  • Rest and recreation activities beyond local cultural activities.
  • Visa and exit fees (not applicable for all destinations).
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance. Read Trip cancellation FAQ (180KB .pdf).
