An Update On Our Habitat Families We Built With in Guatemala!!

9/5/2013

We are glad to tell you that we’ve recently had the opportunity to visit the homes of the families you worked with in Quetzaltenango. Angelina and Giovana are delighted to have their new Habitat homes and send you their warmest greetings. We hope that this experience was as rewarding for you as it was for them.
                                                                                   - J. Leventhal, Hábitat para la Humanidad Guatemala
“We are happy in our new house,” says Giovana. “We’re so thankful for the volunteers coming to
help. It was a lot, and if they ever come to see us, they will see for themselves how we’re content. My
husband and I are so grateful for their help, and are thankful to God as well.”  - Giovana, new Habitat homeowner

Build Day #2

6/5/2013

On day two of building in Xela, we arrived to find that the mason workers had made some significant progress on the homes. The weather was hot during the morning and turned cloudy, breezy and cooler during the afternoon. We continued with the tasks that we began on Monday and spent more time laughing and enjoying each other's company. Group #1 had some special interactions with nearby children who came to visit their site. Group #2 met the husband who will live in the home they're building. We are on schedule to posssibly have roofs erected on both homes by Friday! The video clip above gives you a glance of Group #2's build site.

Fun and Adventure in Xela, Guatemala

12/11/2012

Thermal springs of Las Fuentes Georginas
With its vibrant university population and rich history, Xela is known by many as Guatemala’s cultural hub. Orient yourself around the Parque a Centroamérica and take in one of Latin America’s only gothic-inspired city centers. Stroll through the always vibrant Pasaje Enriquez to get a feel for the city’s nightlife and culture. With a great local music scene and a number of intimate venues, attending one of city’s many daily concerts is a must.
If you’re curious about the massive volcano that looms over your every step in the city then perhaps a climb to the summit of El Volcán Santa María is in order. Or if you’re just looking for an escape outside of the city and don’t feel like summiting an active volcano, check out the less intimidating El Baúl. A trip to the nearby thermal springs of Las Fuentes Georginas in nearby Zunil is also an highly recommended and affordable trip. And if you want to take a break from the chilly highlands and get a taste of Guatemala’s tropical coast, drive an hour and a half to check out the top-flight aquatic and amusement parks of IRTRA near San Felipe, Retalhuleu or keep going and spend a day at the beach in Champerico.

Volunteers are welcome to explore the country before and/or after their Global Village trip - at their own expense and safety risk. If you join our team, you can make a difference by helping build a Habitat home with a family in need and then enjoy an adventure in the beautiful country of Guatemala!

About Quetzaltenango

11/6/2012

Picture
Located 120 miles from the capital, "Xela" (pop. 250,000) is Guatemala’s second largest city. With its growing commercial center and many universities, Xela is one of the fastest growing cities in Central America. Although the city is located nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, you can drive to the tropical pacific coast in about an hour. Given the altitude, Xela has one of Guatemala’s coolest climates. Temperatures generally stay in the 70s year-round when the sun is out, and can get quite cold at night. While green all year round, everything really comes out into full bloom during the rainy season. Bring a heavy sweater for early morning as the nights are chilly, but also plenty of warm clothing to wear during the day.
Quetzaltenango's population is over 50% indigenous, with Ki’che’ and Mam ethnicities accounting for the majority of the area’s indigenous population. Quetzaltenango ranks 9th in poverty of the 22 departments with 34% living in poverty and 10% living in extreme poverty. The primary sources of income include agriculture, clothing manufacturing and artisan production.
